Bonita Bay Club (Cypress)
Bonita Bay Club boasts five 18-hole courses. There are Three Arthur Hills designed layouts: Marsh, Creekside and Bay Island that are accessed by a clubhouse, as well as two Tom Fazio creations which include Cypress and Sabal - which are operated from The club's Naples campus, just ten miles away. The course was opened in the mid-1990s. Cypress was the first course to be opened. Cypress course was shut for over a year as part of the course's extensive renovation that ended in 2022.
Directed to Fazio Design senior design associate Tom Marzolf, the renovation included work on each hole, and the whole layout elevated by 12-18 inches, which improved drainage. Four lakes that were already in play were expanded and six new ones were built, which allowed for approximately 200 million cubic yards of fill to be spread out across the entire property. New irrigation and drainage systems were also set up to improve the playing conditions.
The course's routing is the same, but fairways were made wider the putting surface was widened and green surrounds were pushed out to give additional options for recovery shots. The bulkhead walls of wood were built around the lake's edges on several holes to improve the appearance and new tees have been added, so that there are seven holes on each which allows players to choose between 7,500 and 4,500 yards at 500-yard intervals.
Bunkers were rebuilt using white sand flashed over the top of these hazards. A large number of traps for fairways were moved to take advantage of modern technology in clubs and ball. Massive waste areas were added between holes and these huge expanses of sand are situated in areas that are mostly not playable to provide a striking contrast to the vastness of native plants as well as pine straw.
The adjoining Sabal layout first appeared in 1998. It's set to undergo a major overhaul through Fazio Design in 2023.
